Meet Vitali Siliuk, drum tutor

Professional percussionist from Grodno, Belarus, now teaching in Glasgow. HND in Music (Glasgow Kelvin College). Students have passed 5 Grade 1 and 6 Grade 2 exams this year.

How I started

My journey with drums began when I was about twelve years old, growing up in Grodno, Belarus. My cousin played in a local metal band, and I was lucky enough to visit their rehearsals. Watching him behind the drum kit was fascinating. The music, the energy, the long hair, the whole atmosphere. I was hooked before I could even play a beat. A couple of years later, I started playing with friends. We spent countless evenings, and sometimes entire nights, rehearsing in garages, experimenting with punk and metal, learning from each other and making plenty of noise. Back then, the internet wasn't really an option, and proper learning materials were difficult to find. Most of what we learnt came from trial and error, curiosity and a genuine love of music. After several years of teaching myself, I entered Grodno State College of Arts, where I finally had access to structured musical education and experienced teachers. I later continued my studies at the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts while working as a percussionist in a professional jazz and variety orchestra.

Performing around the world

Those years gave me invaluable experience, from jazz festivals and international dance championships to touring and performing with musicians from different backgrounds. I went on to work with various bands and spent six years performing internationally, including in the Middle East, South Korea and across Europe. Throughout my career, I've explored a wide range of musical styles, from metal, rock and punk to jazz, pop, Latin and traditional folk music. This diversity has shaped not only my playing but also the way I approach teaching today. Eventually, life brought me to Glasgow. Having grown up listening to British and American music, I found it particularly exciting to experience Scotland's musical culture first-hand. I continued performing, completed an HND in Music at Glasgow Kelvin College, and began to focus more seriously on something that had interested me for years: teaching. Although performing had always been the main part of my professional life, I had also gained teaching experience along the way. Today, through my work with Beat It Drum School, teaching has become an increasingly important and rewarding part of my musical career.

How I teach

My teaching philosophy is quite simple: I believe anyone can learn to play the drums. Age, experience and natural ability may affect how quickly someone progresses, but they should never determine whether someone deserves to enjoy music. I don't believe that being a professional musician makes someone a better drummer than an enthusiastic amateur. Music is about much more than earning a living. Having experienced everything from self-teaching to formal education and professional performance, I've learnt that no single teaching method works for everyone. I believe in building solid foundations while adapting lessons to each student's personality, interests and goals. I pay particular attention to the small details, motivation and the relationship between teacher and student. I want my students to feel comfortable, supported and challenged in the right way. Over the past year, my students at Beat It Drum School have achieved five Grade 1 and six Grade 2 examination passes, including students who started with no previous drumming experience. And after all these years, I'm still learning myself. That's one of the things I love most about music: there's always something new to discover, whether you're sitting behind the drums or standing beside someone who's just beginning their journey.
